About fred

Fred is best known as the former bass player for the influential art-punk band Throwing Muses and Grammy-nominated alt-rock band Belly. Prior to being in Throwing Muses and Belly, Fred was active as a drummer and bass player in numerous bands centered on the Newport, RI hardcore punk scene, which gave rise to bands like Vicious Circle and Verbal Assault. Partly because of these DIY roots, Fred left the music ‘business’ after the release of Belly’s ‘Star’ in 1992, choosing instead to quietly and independently pursue his own music.

Fred returned to a more ‘public’ musician role in 2018 with a release of the six song EP ‘Homeless’, and as supporting act for former band mate Kristin Hersh on a short UK tour. In the following year, Fred released another six song EP, entitiled ‘Pulsing’, which also preceded an opening slot for a month long UK tour with Kristin Hersh’s Electric Trio (of which Fred was also a member, playing bass).

Outside of his musical career, Fred is also deeply interested in occult studies (see his astrology website here) and philosophy, and in 2016 completed a Ph.D. in Humanities. In addition to his work as a musician and astrologer, Fred also spends time as an adjunct professor in the Religious Studies, Philosophy, and English Departments at various universities.
